Protest Over Albania's Club Med Resort[/b]

Nearly one thousand villagers blocked fresh efforts to start construction on the Club Med resort in southern Albania’s Kakome bay on Thursday, local media report.
After three years of legal headaches and protests from local villagers, Club Med had announced in July of moving forward with its project to build a tourist village in the picturesque bay.
The French hospitality company said at the time that it has reached an agreement with local villagers, who claimed ownership of the land, to become a stakeholder in the project.
However in September, the Agency for the Restitution and Compensation of Property had denied the claims of ownership from the villagers as not valid, which seems to have reworked the company’s pledge to share part of the stock with the residents of the nearby village of Nivica.
The holiday company plans to build a luxury 350 villa complex in the pristine bay, 220 kilometres south-west of the capital Tirana.
The resort will be built by the Albania construction company Riviera and operated by Club Med. The cost of the project is valued at roughly €75 million.
The villas will span in an area of 700,000 square meters, and will have a capacity of 700 beds. The resort will be operative for six months every year and will include swimming pools, sports grounds, shops and a movie theatre.

Nearly one thousand villagers blocked fresh efforts to start construction on the Club Med resort in southern Albania’s Kakome bay. After three years of legal headaches and protests from local villagers, the situation has escalated to violence.
A spokesman for the French hospitality company said that they had reached an agreement with local villagers and agreed never to play the unofficial Club Med anthem, Hands Up, in their country.
However in September during the signing of the contracts, a representative of the club was reportedly humming the tune. This touched off scattered incidents of violence which escalated to the point that riot police were called in from the Disney Resort and theme park in the nearby village of Nivica.

The Albanian goverment for the build of this structure has stolen the properties of the villagers. They don't pay anything to the villagers for their land.. They don't buy the land but just take it with force.. Is that possible in 2008 in Europe? I don't think so.
The land is holly for any person and Nivica's villagers wouldn't let u to build in their land. [/i]
